A Note From The Artist

I have always loved abstract art.  Not all abstract, of course.

In my mind I see bold colors and shapes constantly.  In fact, I worry that someday it may stop.

Enter my dilemma, I want to create everything I see in my mind’s eye, and there’s never enough time.

All my life I have loved creating art - as a young boy I would build waterfalls out of rocks and stick the hose in the middle to create beautiful water features.  Usually bending the hose end, or stuffing a pebble in it to create a stream of water.  My father wasn’t pleased.

In high school I took as many art classes as I could, in college I took art studio as a minor, with my major in business.  All along the way, my instructors pleaded with me to pursue artistry as a career.  I guess I was afraid.  So, for the last 30 years I have been in the corporate world, while doing art as a hobby.

One of the greatest compliments to my art style came as a question.  It was: “What kind of art is that, I mean I know it’s abstract but…”.

It is difficult for me to describe my style.  Yes, it’s abstract but, there’s something else.  About 90% of the time I just start a painting with a few ideas in mind, not knowing what the end result will look like, exactly.  Some of my pieces are like puzzles, where they have been constructed and reconstructed many times over until they somehow solve themselves.  This method takes much time and can be quite frustrating.

About 5 years ago I began focusing on relaxing and allowing my work to have imperfections.  My brain is mathematical as well as artistic, which means that everything must be in order and balanced.  The result?  Symmetry and patterned looking work.  Beautiful.  However, very time consuming, (I’m talking years to finish).  So, hence the move towards loosening up.  The result has opened up my creativity and I have began creating new and beautiful styles of painting.  I rarely paint with a brush, anything but a brush!

Where I am now.  Currently, I have reorganized my art studio to allow me to paint fast and without barriers.  What I mean is that I’ve moved away from paint in tubes.  Most everything I use now are professional grade liquid acrylics.  This liquid tends to loosen me up to quickly get color on the canvas.  This flow, no pun, is allowing me to download those visions in my head to a canvas before they are lost or altered by time.  And it’s fun.

For many years I have been painting with my son, Axel.  He is an amazing artist, and I respect his advice on pieces as he respects my input as well.  We work well together, pushing each other to create bigger and better works.

For now, I am still in the corporate world.  However, the pull to the art side is ever strengthening and eventually I will walk through that door and become what I was always meant to be; an artist by trade.

Take some time to absorb the images, you may see things that even I do not.

All the Best,

Brian Anderson
